Curiosity and Creativity: conversations between artists and astronomers

at the Cambridge Science Festival on 13th and 14th of March

In an exciting new partnership between Arts and Science, three contemporary women artists - Gillian McFarland, Ione Parkin and Alison Lochhead - have been collaborating with astronomers and planetary geologists to produce an exhibition with related discussions.

The artists are interpreting the universe through the materials of their own disciplines – painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing and glass blowing.
The result is a new perspective on the fabulously rich imagery of space, involving scientists and the wider community in a creative dialogue around current thinking and research about the universe.
The exhibition is supported by the Royal Astronomical Society, who have awarded initial funds for creative research towards a touring exhibition.

Private View on Mon 13 March: The exhibition will be launched in Cambridge as part of the Cambridge Science Festival and officially opened by Professor Martin A Barstow, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor of Astrophysics and Space Science at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester and former President of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Mon 13 March - 7pm:  We are very pleased to also welcome bricklayer turned astronomer and author Gary Fildes, Director and Founder of the award winning Kielder Observatory in Northumberland. He will be there to give a talk on 'Astronomy through the Ages' and sign copies of his book, An Astronomer's Tale: A Life Under The Stars.

Tues 14 March, 7 - 8.30pm:  There will be a panel discussion by the artists and astronomers involved on the project.
